Carboys and Airlocks
The basic kit includes a 6.5 gallon bucket for your primary fermentation. Transferring to a secondary after the first week of fermentation allows the beer more time to settle and reduces the amount of sediment that is in the bottle, producing a clearer beer. Carboys are typically used because they are clear. This allows you to see what your beer is doing and helps in avoiding the sediment when transferring to the bottling bucket.
