Summer 2008 Release - A limited number in stock. Only while supplies last. Price: $169.95 Product Details: GARD, FRANCE SUMMER 2008 LIMITED RELEASE 18 litre format with Crushed Grape Pack A tribute to an emerging star, in southern France Mourvèdre has long been a component of wines in the Rhône and Provence regions. However, since 1970, extensive replanting of Mourvèdre has increased vineyard acreage more than 7 fold and the emergence of Mourvèdre as a star has begun. Today, Mourvèdre can be found in the starring role as lead variety at many esteemed wineries in Southern France. Chateau de Beaucastel, often cited as one of the best producers in Chateauneuf du Pape, uses up to 70% of the variety in its reds. In the Bandol appellation of Provence, red wines must contain a minimum of 50% Mourvèdre. Wines made solely from Mourvèdre are now being released. Mourvèdre has become the most exciting grape in Southern France. Modern techniques are resulting in wines with expressive complexity that show savory, meaty, earthy, and herbal character with notes of blackberry, licorice, lavender, black pepper, and spice. They have solid tannins and sinewy texture with a finish suggestive of mineral or graphite. The wines have great aging potential. Mourvèdre has an affinity for Grenache. Grenache softens the wine, introduces cherry and other red fruit notes, refines the structure, and makes the wines approachable much sooner. The distinctive meaty and sauvage character of Mourvèdre still shows through. Vineyard and Vintning: Our source vineyard of the juices and crushed grapes used in this wine is on the right bank of the Rhône River, near where Gard borders Provence. Cellar Craft uses 2 parts Mourvèdre to 1 part Grenache juices; ferment on equal amounts of Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Syrah crushed grapes and utilize two-stage Hungarian oak treatment -- natural shavings in the primary fermenter and light-toast cubes after fermentation. The Wine: Medium bodied with bright cherry color. The nose displays black cherry, cranberry and raspberry fruit scents, licorice, basil, black pepper and vanilla against an earthy background. Flavors echo the cherry and cranberry while introducing a note of fig. Medium tannins give grip and are followed by a long finish. More masculine than most southern France wines. Meaty and earthy. Nicely balanced fruit but not fruit driven. Cellaring: Shows well after 9-12 months but will develop for at least 2 years. Food Pairing: Great with grilled, red meats and sausage. With age, works with more complex meat dishes. If you have access to game – venison, elk, moose, or wild duck – this would be a top consideration. |
